Protective capacitors reduce surges (overvoltages) and thus protect the insulation and windings of rotating machines (motors) and transformers from damage. Together with surge arresters, they reduce the shape and size of the surge wave.
The next variant is a capacitor with a series-connected non-inductive resistor, called an RC element.
